7SR: a look back

A special thanks to Kelley for jotting down some of her thoughts from 7SR and to Grace for taking pics for us that we will eventually post on the flickr account!

grace and kelley 7srLate Saturday morning, students of Parkside seeking to hit the slopes as well as grow closer to God packed up their things and headed to the Seven Springs Ski Resort. Three hours of movie-watching, ipod-surfing, and scenery-gazing later, our destination was finally reached. Many decided to tube Saturday night and experienced the “magic carpet,” a conveyor belt type mechanism that transferred tubers to the top, where they proceeded to risk their lives on the various hills. Others chose to board or ski, and everyone came back looking exhausted and ready to call it a night, although not before gouging themselves with the late night buffet of salad, pizza, and deserts.

One aspect of Saturday night that did not go unnoticed was the message of our guest speaker Bing, although he was not so much a guest throughout the trip but rather a missed and welcomed friend. His message, although relatively short, focused on the Substitute we have all been granted—he reminded us that, although we are sinners, Jesus redeems us through the sacrifice He made by dying for us. While the message may have been one that seems repetitive to most Christians, Bing painted a picture of a mother giving up dinner for her son, although her son had misbehaved and deserved the punishment himself. Bing reminded us that, although we do not deserve the gift we have been given and never, ever will, the price of our sins has already been paid for by Someone who decided to take our place. Clearly, the message was one worthy of being picked apart throughout the weekend—something for us to leave with besides bruised bodies and wind-whipped faces.

Sunday was the beginning of another adventure entirely. Many ventured out for the first time onto the actual terrain of Seven Springs, experiencing the six-person ski-lift, mansions hidden on the tops of the hills, as well as additional areas throughout the resort.

Eventually, after facing extremely brutal winds, many decided to remain the rest of the day in the lodge, watching movies, chatting with friends, and exploring the various shops and other areas of Seven Springs. Some, however, braved the intense weather conditions and stayed on the slopes the remainder of the day, coming back with stories as well as stomachs ready for the Oakhurst Tea Room. After satisfying our hunger, we loaded once more onto the buses and headed towards home. The movies were playing, although most slept or chatted quietly with friends. As we arrived at the Warehouse, phone calls were made and news was spread that hardly anyone had school the following day, on account of the artic storm that had swept throughout Ohio. The ski retreat suddenly was at a close– luggage was loaded, cars were scraped off and goodbyes were made, all with the hope that next year’s retreat would be even as remotely as memorable as this one was, although that was something that seemed almost as predictable as Ohio weather in February—impossible.

QotW: Literal Interpretation?

question-of-the-week.jpgIt is Wednesday so that means that I will answer a question that you asked. So here it is, “Hey Matt, how literal of an interpretation of the Bible should we hold?” Thanks for the great question.

There has been a lot written on this subject and I have space to only give you the cliff notes. However, if you would like to read more then I would recommend that you pick up a copy of Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem. It is a big book, but don’t be intimidate, I promise that it will be valuable resource for you Dr. Grudem has the ability to make complex subject simple. All quotes in this posting are from this book. Now on to the question.

When we talk about interpretation of the Bible we have to begin with a basic assumption that says, “All the words in the Bible are God’s words, and that therefore to disbelieve or disobey any word in Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God (2 Tim. 3:16).” The technical term for this is inerrancy, “The inerrancy of Scripture means that Scripture in the original manuscript does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact.” The Bible always tells the truth about everything it talks about. That doesn’t mean that it answers every single question that we have about any subject (like how to change the oil in your car) but what is says about any subject is true. “The truth of the Scriptures does not demand that the Bible report events with exact, scientific detail (thought all of the details it does report are true). In addition, because it was written by ordinary men in an ordinary language with an ordinary style, it does contain loose or free quotations and some uncommon and unusual forms of grammar or spelling. But there are not matters of truthfulness. The Bible does not, in its original form, affirm anything contrary to fact. If the Bible does affirm something contrary to fact, then it cannot be trusted. And if the Bible cannot be trusted, then God himself cannot be trusted. To disbelieve God himself is to place yourself as a higher authority with a deeper, more developed understanding on a topic or topics than God himself.”

Useless Living

John WesleyHey this quote was in the bulletin last week. I know that a lot of you were on 7SR this past weekend…which was a really good time and probably didn’t see it. (UPDATE Dan is editing the 7SR video right now, Grace is sorting through pics and Kelley is doing a brief write up from the weekend. All will be posted in the next couple of days!) I thought it might be worthwhile to post it for you to think on.

O Lord, let me not live to be useless.”

This is credited to John Wesley who was a minister and Christian theologian back in the day (1703-1791). It is one of those quotes that I should probably post around my office and at home. You know, in spots that I tend to spend a lot of my day. I love the web, Fantasy Football, e-mail and in and of themselves none are inherently bad. However, I can get them out of whack proportionally and end up living uselessly. Where would it be beneficial for you to have this little reminder?

Bad Weather?

bad weatherI just heard that it is supposed to snow like crazy in the next 24 hours, so I wanted to put up a quick post to remind you to check this website to see whether or not we have Student Impact or some other type of event. If the weather gets really nasty (snow day?) and I decide to cancel, I will post something up here to that effect. If, however, you don’t see anything on this site, we are still on. In other words, assume we are meeting unless you read something up here that tells you otherwise.

Another way to find out if an event has been canceled is to sign up for Twitter, an online service that will send you a text message when an update is posted. Thanks!

Service Team @ Alternaterm

The high school Service Team is a group of individuals who proactively seek out ways to serve others. This group is entirely student lead and student run. I (mcalvey) just help communicate opportunities for you to join them in service. On March 1st the Service Team is headed back to Alternaterm to do some work around their facility. If this is something that you would like to help out with then click here for the details.
