Useless Living

Posted by Parkside Youth Admin on Feb 11 2008

John WesleyHey this quote was in the bulletin last week. I know that a lot of you were on 7SR this past weekend…which was a really good time and probably didn’t see it. (UPDATE Dan is editing the 7SR video right now, Grace is sorting through pics and Kelley is doing a brief write up from the weekend. All will be posted in the next couple of days!) I thought it might be worthwhile to post it for you to think on.

O Lord, let me not live to be useless.”

This is credited to John Wesley who was a minister and Christian theologian back in the day (1703-1791). It is one of those quotes that I should probably post around my office and at home. You know, in spots that I tend to spend a lot of my day. I love the web, Fantasy Football, e-mail and in and of themselves none are inherently bad. However, I can get them out of whack proportionally and end up living uselessly. Where would it be beneficial for you to have this little reminder?

    so true!

I think that sometimes we all get so caught up in the ways of the world that our view of Christ is obscured by worldy thoughts, possesions, or actions. If anything we get confused by what the world expects of us and what Christ has planned in our lives. For me I know that I often struggle with trying to please everyone. That is not a bad thing, but sometimes it becomes such a priority that it can spiral out of control and I can loose all focus of what is really important in my life, which is to serve and follow Him. After reading this quote it really made me think about how much of my life could sometimes be considered useless. As I said earlier we often times try to please the world more than Him. My hope is however, for myself, that I would try to turn my focus to pleasing Him by remembering this quote when doing or saying “useless” things.

yea i really agree with sarah. i think alot of people, me included, try to please everyone. and that is impossible, theres no way to do that. and we do have to take a reality check and realize what we’re doing with our lives and if we’re living “uselessly”…. i really like that.

i definitely agree with what everyone said…and so much with this quote. i get so caught up in other things, such as trying to “figure it all out” or pleasing people, like sarah and kyle said, and ESPECIALLY with facebook. as stupid as it sounds, it just takes up so much of my time. i’ve begun to realize that time is a precious thing, and it is definitely something that has to be handled carefully. sometimes i feel really useless by the way that i use it, and i definitely need to be reminded of what is most important, which is of course Jesus

yeah, i definitely spend more time being useless than being useful. especially now that i’ve got a mean case of senioritis. i have to remember that being useful doesn’t just mean serving God through service projects or through reaching out to others; but being useful also means giving everything i have to God and doing it for his glory. that includes how i interact with friends, go to school, whatever, i must give God my best and pray that he can do something useful with it.

    I agree
